Adaptive Chair Yoga

Classes Details Main Image

Course description

I am a firm believer that yoga is for anyone and not being able to get on a yoga mat shouldn't stop anyone from benefiting from this wonderful practice.

Whether you have ongoing mobility issues, are recovering from an illness or just don't have time to get out your mat, then adaptive chair yoga can help you. This is a gentle slow paced yoga class using chairs and props

I have axial spondylarthritis which is an autoimmune disease which leads to ankylosing spondylitis if not properly managed. This means that sometimes I can't get on the floor to practice – but I can always get on a chair. I don't let my condition stop me from doing something I love.

I trained to teach adaptive, accessible chair yoga with Liz Oppedijk and gained a Lakshmi Voelker chair yoga certification.

Benefits of this class

This is a gentle, slow paced class suitable for all.

The class uses a chair, the wall and props to allow a good stretch while feeling stable and supported.

You don't have to get down onto the floor or a mat.

Class suitability

I work with clients who have medical conditions or disabilities that stop them getting on the floor, as well as older individuals who want a good stretch but don't want to spend 30 mins getting back up again from a mat!

This is a fun and relaxed class with a great sense of community. All postures are adapted on an individual basis so that everyone can participate in the class and get a good stretch.

I love this class as it allows me to get creative so that I can adapt traditional yoga poses to make them accesiible for everyone in the class.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

Answer

Whatever you feel the most comfortable in. Wear clothing that is comfortable to move and stretch in. Materials that breathe and wick away moisture are the most comfortable. Shoes and socks are not worn in class. If you feel uncomfortable without socks then we recommend yoga toe socks which allow you to grip and move your toes properly.

Answers

Yes please. We don't have storage facilities. If you don't have a mat for your first session you could use a folded towel. Once you are committed to regular yoga it would be wise to purchase your own mat - Vicky can help you source one.

Answers

Always make sure that Vicky is aware, before the class, of any injuries or issues so that she can make accommodations in the class. It is important to let Vicky know of any changes since the initial medical forms were completed. Unfortunately the schedules yoga classes are not appropriate during pregnancy.

Answers

Please arrive 5 minutes before class starts so that you can set up and class can commence on time.
